How the Natural Color of a Binder Appears Differently Across Watercolor Series

The binder has its own natural color

When producing watercolors, attention is often focused on pigments or colorants. Long-term production observations, however, show that the binder itself also has a natural color.

Between different production batches, the binder may show slight variations in color depth. These differences are usually subtle, but they do not appear in the same way across every watercolor series.

The effect is more noticeable in traditional watercolors

Among traditional watercolor colors, the influence of the binder can be observed more easily in certain shades.

Lighter and more transparent colors may show a slight difference in their overall appearance when the binder itself is slightly darker or lighter. How noticeable this becomes depends on the transparency, stability, and optical characteristics of the individual pigment.

Darker colors, particularly black, are generally affected much less because the pigment itself dominates the final appearance.

Long-term observation shows that these differences are usually subtle and do not significantly affect the practical use or painting performance of the watercolor.


Metallic watercolors are affected only slightly

In metallic watercolors, the natural color of the binder usually plays a much smaller role.

The metallic particles have high covering power, and the final appearance is strongly influenced by the interaction between the particles and light. Once light becomes part of the visual effect, the influence of slight binder color variations becomes much less noticeable.

Long-term comparisons therefore show only minimal differences.


Chameleon watercolors present a different observation

The overall influence of binder color also remains relatively small in chameleon watercolors.

Because these colors depend primarily on special effect pigments interacting with light, the binder usually has little influence on the final visual effect. However, on light-colored surfaces—especially white paper—a darker binder may occasionally become slightly visible beneath the color layer.

On darker surfaces, particularly black paper, this effect is generally much less noticeable.

These observations show that the painting surface itself also becomes an important part of long-term material documentation.


Fluorescent watercolors remain largely unaffected

Fluorescent watercolors also show only a limited response to variations in binder color.

The high brightness of the fluorescent colorants generally dominates the overall appearance, making slight differences in the binder much less visible. As a result, the colors remain visually stable across different production batches.

Long-term production observations have shown this pattern consistently over time.


The same binder can produce different results in different materials

Comparing multiple watercolor series demonstrates that the same binder does not produce the same visual effect in every material.

Pigments, colorants, transparency, covering power, and even the painting surface all contribute to how visible the binder becomes in the finished color. Because of this, the influence of the binder can only be understood by observing it within each material system rather than as an isolated component.
